AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: cGAS (cyclic GMP-AMP synthase) has been implicated in various cellular processes, but its role in ß-cell proliferation and diabetes is not fully understood. This study investigates the impact of cGAS on ß-cell proliferation, particularly in the context of diabetes. METHODS: Utilizing mouse models, including cGAS and STING (stimulator of interferon genes) knockout mice, we explored the role of cGAS in ß-cell function. This involved ß-cell-specific cGAS knockout (cGASßKO) mice, created by breeding cGAS floxed mice with transgenic mice expressing Cre recombinase under the insulin II promoter. We analyzed cGAS expression in diabetic mouse models, evaluated the effects of cGAS deficiency on glucose tolerance, and investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects through RNA sequencing. RESULTS: cGAS expression is upregulated in the islets of diabetic mice and by high glucose treatment in MIN6 cells. Both global cGAS deficiency and ß-cell-specific cGAS knockout mice lead to improved glucose tolerance by promoting ß-cell mass. Interestingly, STING knockout did not affect pancreatic ß-cell mass, suggesting a STING-independent mechanism for cGAS's role in ß-cells. Further analyses revealed that cGAS- but not STING-deficiency leads to reduced expression of CEBPß, a known suppressor of ß-cell proliferation, concurrently with increased ß-cell proliferation. Moreover, overexpression of CEBPß reverses the upregulation of Cyclin D1 and D2 induced by cGAS deficiency, thereby regulating ß-cell proliferation. These results confirm that cGAS regulation of ß-cell proliferation via a CEBPß-dependent but STING-independent mechanism. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our findings highlight the pivotal role of cGAS in promoting ß-cell proliferation and maintaining glucose homeostasis, potentially by regulating CEBPß expression in a STING-independent manner. This study uncovers the significance of cGAS in controlling ß-cell mass and identifies a potential therapeutic target for enhancing ß-cell proliferation in the treatment of diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: The present work concentrated on validating whether sinomenine alleviates bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. METHODS: A rat model of pulmonary fibrosis was constructed through intratracheal injection with 5 mg/kg BLM, and the effects of 30 mg/kg sinomenine on pulmonary inflammation, fibrosis, apoptosis, and 4-hydroxynonenal density were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson's trichrome staining, TUNEL staining, and immunohistochemistry. Hydroxyproline content and concentrations of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers were detected using corresponding kits. MRC-5 cells were treated with 10 ng/ml PDGF, and the effects of 1 mM sinomenine on cell proliferation were assessed by EdU assays. The mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines and the protein levels of collagens, fibrosis markers, and key markers involved in the TLR4/NLRP3/TGFß signaling were tested with RT-qPCR and immunoblotting analysis. RESULTS: Sinomenine attenuated pulmonary fibrosis and inflammation while reducing hydroxyproline content and the protein expression of collagens and fibrosis markers in BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis rats. Sinomenine reduced apoptosis in lung samples of BLM-challenged rats by increasing Bcl-2 and reducing Bax and cleaved caspase-3 protein expression. In addition, sinomenine alleviated inflammatory response and oxidative stress in rats with pulmonary fibrosis induced by BLM. Moreover, sinomenine inhibited the TLR4/NLRP3/TGFß signaling pathway in lung tissues of BLM-stimulated rats. Furthermore, TLR4 inhibitor, TAK-242, attenuated PDGF-induced fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis in MRC-5 cells. CONCLUSION: Sinomenine attenuates BLM-caused pulmonary fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress by inhibiting the TLR4/NLRP3/TGFß signaling, indicating that sinomenine might become a therapeutic candidate to treat pulmonary fibrosis.

Wood possesses several advantageous qualities including innocuity, low cost, aesthetic appeal, and excellent biocompatibility, and its naturally abundant functional groups and diverse structural forms facilitate functionalization modification. As the most sustainable bio-based material, the combination of wood with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) stands poised to significantly advance the cause of green sustainable production while mitigating the escalating challenges of energy consumption. However, the inherent weak polarizability of natural wood limits its development for TENGs. Herein, we present the pioneering development of a flexible transparent wood-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TW-TENG) combining excellent triboelectrical properties, optical properties, and wood aesthetics through sodium chlorite delignification and epoxy resin impregnation. Thanks to the strong electron-donating groups in the epoxy resin, the TW-TENG obtained an open-circuit voltage of up to ~127 V, marking a remarkable 530% enhancement compared to the original wood. Furthermore, durability and stability were substantiated through 10,000 working cycles. In addition, the introduction of epoxy resin and lignin removal endowed the TW-TENG with excellent optical characteristics, with optical transmittance of up to 88.8%, while preserving the unique texture and aesthetics of the wood completely. Finally, we show the application prospects of TW-TENGs in the fields of self-power supply, motion sensing, and smart home through the demonstration of a TW-TENG in the charging and discharging of capacitors and the output of electrical signals in different scenarios.

Objective: To improve the preoperative management of patients undergoing day arthroscopy. Methods: Based on the evidence-based concept, the preoperative management strategy of daytime arthroscopic surgery was practiced, and the implementation effect of patients undergoing daytime arthroscopic surgery before and after evidence application was compared. The evidence-based strategies adopted in this study include: informed consent,seven aspects: anesthesia assessment, health education, prohibition of drinking and eating, preoperative medication guidance, surgical arrangement, and emergency management. Results: After applying evidence-based strategies, significant improvements were observed in various quality indicators, including reduced waiting time, reduced surgical cancellations, increased patient satisfaction, and reduced unplanned hospitalization rates. Conclusion: Based on the evidence-based concept, the practice of preoperative management strategies for patients undergoing daytime arthroscopic surgery optimizes the daytime surgical process from the strict implementation of patient health education and evaluation, as well as the establishment of compliant and reasonable surgical schedules and emergency mechanisms. This improves the preoperative management behavior of daytime surgery, enhances the patient's medical experience, and enhances the quality of daytime surgical care, providing a good basis for management and decision-making.

An unconventional [1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1] annulation process was developed for the construction of ß,ß-dithioketones by merging C-C and C-S bond cleavage. In this reaction, rongalite concurrently served as triple C1 units, dual sulfur(II) synthons, and a reductant for the first time. Mechanism investigation indicated that the reaction involved the self-mediated valence state change of rongalite. By performing this step-economical method, the challenging construction of C5-substituted 1,3-dithiane can be achieved under mild and simple conditions.

Human hippocampal organoids (hHOs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have emerged as promising models for investigating neurodegenerative disorders, such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. However, obtaining the electrical information of these free-floating organoids in a noninvasive manner remains a challenge using commercial multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). The three-dimensional (3D) MEAs developed recently acquired only a few neural signals due to limited channel numbers. Here, we report a hippocampal cyborg organoid (cyb-organoid) platform coupling a liquid metal-polymer conductor (MPC)-based mesh neuro-interface with hHOs. The mesh MPC (mMPC) integrates 128-channel multielectrode arrays distributed on a small surface area (~2*2 mm). Stretchability (up to 500%) and flexibility of the mMPC enable its attachment to hHOs. Furthermore, we show that under Wnt3a and SHH activator induction, hHOs produce HOPX+ and PAX6+ progenitors and ZBTB20+PROX1+ dentate gyrus (DG) granule neurons. The transcriptomic signatures of hHOs reveal high similarity to the developing human hippocampus. We successfully detect neural activities from hHOs via the mMPC from this cyb-organoid. Compared with traditional planar devices, our non-invasive coupling offers an adaptor for recording neural signals from 3D models.

Background: In China, little is known about the hope level of older people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study was to examine the hope level of older PLWHA in China and identify related factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Sichuan province in China among older PLWHA. A standardized self-report questionnaire, the Herth Hope Index, was adopted. Multiple linear regression was used to identify factors influencing hope level. p-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: There were 314 participants with an average age of 64.5 (SD ± 8.7). Most of the participants were males (72.6%), primary school and below (65.9%), rural household registration (58.6%) and married (64.3%). More than half of the older adults had pension insurance, had a monthly income of more than RMB 1,000 and considered themselves to be in good health. About 80% confirmed being diagnosed for more than a year and disclosed their HIV status to family and friends. The majority of the population had low medium social support (79%). More than 80% had moderate and severe HIV stigma. Many older PLWHA had medium and high levels of hope, with an average score of 34.31 (SD ± 4.85). Multiple linear regression showed that having pension insurance (ß = 1.337, p = 0.015), longer diagnosis (ß = 0.497, p = 0.031), better self-reported health (ß = 1.416, p<0.001) and higher levels of social support (ß = 2.222, p < 0.001) were positively associated with higher levels of hope. HIV stigma (ß = -1.265, p < 0.001) was negatively correlated with hope level. Conclusion: The hope level of older PLWHA is good, but there is still room for improvement, and its hope is related to multiple factors. Therefore, the AIDS-related healthcare sector should pay special attention to the hope of older PLWHA, help them to improve their health, provide financial assistance and social aid to those with financial difficulties, and take measures to reduce HIV stigma, improve family support for the older adults, and guide the older adults to adopt a positive approach to life.

The effect of stress on risk-taking or risk-averse behavior in decision-making has been inconclusive in previous research, with few studies revealing the underlying neural mechanisms. This study employed event-related potentials technique and combined a social cold pressor assessment test with a mental arithmetic task to induce stress responses, aiming to investigate the influence of exogenous stress on the risk decision-making process. Stress induction results indicated that, in addition to raising heart rate and blood pressure, stress responses were accompanied by enhanced negative emotions, diminished positive emotions, and alterations in neural activity. The outcomes of risk decision-making showed that stress did not significantly affect risk preference or time of choice but did reduce the feedback-related negativity/reward positivity, with a particularly significant effect observed for large outcomes. Stress also altered the amplitude of the P3 component, with stress decreasing the P3 value for winning outcomes relative to losing outcomes. The study suggests that understanding how stress affects risk preference should consider the emotional valence induced by stress. Contrary to the reward sensitivity hypothesis, stress weakened reward sensitivity. Stress led to changes in the allocation of cognitive resources for outcome evaluation: compared to negative outcomes, stress reduced cognitive resources for positive outcomes, which might be related to the enhanced negative emotions induced by stress. The study highlights the importance of focusing on the subjective emotional experience induced by stress in future research on stress and risk decision-making.

A new triterpenoid compound 1* (scandine A1) was obtained from 95% ethanol extract of Uncaria laevigata. Meanwhile, eleven described compounds were also isolated for the first time from Uncaria laevigata. Herein, compound 2 exhibited strong diastolic cardio-cerebrovascular activity (EC50BA = 9.22 µM and EC50CA = 14.65 µM), which was not been previously described. Compound 1* also showed certain diastolic cardio-cerebrovasculary activity. Network pharmacology indicated that the diastolic cardio-cerebrovascular activity of compound 2 was most correlated with the Ras signalling pathway. Molecular docking confirmed that it exhibited strong binding activity with target protein (matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor-1). Moreover, compound 2 demonstrated significant potential on cardio-cerebrovascular activity in vitro. Overall, compounds 1* and 2 with good diastolic cardio-cerebrovascular activity were discovered in this work.

Geriatric diseases are a group of diseases with unique characteristics related to senility. With the rising trend of global aging, senile diseases now mainly include endocrine, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, skeletal, and muscular diseases and cancer. Compared with younger populations, the structure and function of various cells, tissues and organs in the body of the elderly undergo a decline as they age, rendering them more susceptible to external factors and diseases, leading to serious tissue damage. Tissue damage presents a significant obstacle to the overall health and well-being of older adults, exerting a profound impact on their quality of life. Moreover, this phenomenon places an immense burden on families, society, and the healthcare system.In recent years, stem cell-derived exosomes have become a hot topic in tissue repair research. The combination of these exosomes with biomaterials allows for the preservation of their biological activity, leading to a significant improvement in their therapeutic efficacy. Among the numerous biomaterial options available, hydrogels stand out as promising candidates for loading exosomes, owing to their exceptional properties. Due to the lack of a comprehensive review on the subject matter, this review comprehensively summarizes the application and progress of combining stem cell-derived exosomes and hydrogels in promoting tissue damage repair in geriatric diseases. In addition, the challenges encountered in the field and potential prospects are presented for future advancements.

The advancement of highly effective heterojunction photocatalysts with improved charge separation and transfer has become a crucial scientific perspective for utilizing solar energy. In this study, we developed the S-scheme heterostructure by depositing N-doped CeO2-δ (NC) nanoparticles onto two-dimensional ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets via hydrolysis strategy for significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. The optimal H2 generation rate of âˆ¼ 798 µmol g-1 h-1 was achieved for NC-3@ZIS under solar light irradiation, which is about 18 and 2 times higher than those of pristine CeO2 (∼44 µmol g-1 h-1) and ZIS (∼358 µmol g-1 h-1), respectively. The photogenerated electrons from NC interact with the photogenerated holes of ZIS driven by an internal electric field, confirmed by In-situ KPFM, DFT calculation, and XPS results. According to EPR and photoelectrochemical measurements, NC-3@ZIS composite shows dramatically high separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. This study provides a new approach for developing non-noble metal S-scheme heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

The quality and quantity of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, particularly CD8+ T cells, are important parameters for the control of tumor growth and response to immunotherapy. Here, we show in murine and human cancers that these parameters exhibit circadian oscillations, driven by both the endogenous circadian clock of leukocytes and rhythmic leukocyte infiltration, which depends on the circadian clock of endothelial cells in the tumor microenvironment. To harness these rhythms therapeutically, we demonstrate that efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy and immune checkpoint blockade can be improved by adjusting the time of treatment during the day. Furthermore, time-of-day-dependent T cell signatures in murine tumor models predict overall survival in patients with melanoma and correlate with response to anti-PD-1 therapy. Our data demonstrate the functional significance of circadian dynamics in the tumor microenvironment and suggest the importance of leveraging these features for improving future clinical trial design and patient care.

In recent years, China has been implementing policies to improve the livestock industry in response to the global trend toward green and low-carbon development. These policies include the establishment of demonstration zones for high-standard agriculture, the relocation of farms to the north, etc. This study aims to investigate the impact of changes in the spatial structure of the livestock industry on methane emissions. It used panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2001 to 2021 and applied the IPCC methodology to quantify methane emissions at both the national and provincial levels. In addition, a spatial econometric model was used to analyze the impact of changes in the spatial structure of the livestock industry on methane emissions. The results show that methane from livestock in China decreased from 13.85 million tons in 2001 to 11.82 million tons in 2021. In addition, methane emissions from livestock in China show a significant spatial gradient and correlation. The Southwest has the highest methane emissions, accounting for 24 % of the total emissions. After controlling for spatial correlation and other factors in the model, it was found that the spatial structure of the livestock industry has a different influence on methane emissions both in the province and in neighboring provinces. To improve methane emission efficiency in the future, policies such as establishing functional zones for livestock farming, strengthening technological innovation and sharing for green development in agriculture, and promoting the optimization of agricultural and rural management structures should be implemented.

Numerous plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) have the potential to inflict considerable damage on agricultural crops. Through a comprehensive survey aimed at identifying PPNs affecting crops, cyst nematodes were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). Employing both molecular and morphological techniques, this cyst nematode was conclusively identified as Heterodera ripae. Notably, this represents the first documented occurrence of this particular cyst nematode species within the rhizosphere soil of F. esculentum.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress is associated with various diseases including liver dysfunction, yet effective intervention strategies remain lacking due to the unrevealed pathogenesis mechanism. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the relevance between BMAL1-controlled circadian rhythms and lipoxygenase 15 (ALOX15)-mediated phospholipids peroxidation in psychological stress-induced liver injury, and to investigate whether hepatocyte phospholipid peroxidation signaling is involved in the hepatoprotective effects of a Chinese patent medicine, Pien Tze Huang (PZH). METHODS: Restraint stress models were established to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of psychological stress-induced liver injury and the hepatoprotective effects of PZH. Redox lipidomics based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied for lipid profiling. RESULTS: The present study discovered that acute restraint stress could induce liver injury. Notably, lipidomic analysis confirmed that phospholipid peroxidation was accumulated in the livers of stressed mice. Additionally, the essential core circadian clock gene Brain and Muscle Arnt-like Protein-1 (Bmal1) was altered in stressed mice. Circadian disruption in mice, as well as BMAL1-overexpression in human HepaRG cells, also appeared to have a significant increase in phospholipid peroxidation, suggesting that stress-induced liver injury is closely related to circadian rhythm and phospholipid peroxidation. Subsequently, arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX15), a critical enzyme that contributed to phospholipid peroxidation, was screened as a potential regulatory target of BMAL1. Mechanistically, BMAL1 promoted ALOX15 expression via direct binding to an E-box-like motif in the promoter. Finally, this study revealed that PZH treatment significantly relieved pathological symptoms of psychological stress-induced liver injury with a potential mechanism of alleviating ALOX15-mediated phospholipid peroxidation. CONCLUSION: Our findings illustrate the critical role of BMAL1-triggered phospholipid peroxidation in psychological stress-induced liver injury and provide new insight into treating psychological stress-associated liver diseases by TCM intervention.

PURPOSES: To investigate the features of the anterior segment structures in neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and analyze its differences from primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). METHODS: This study included patients who were first diagnosed with monocular NVG and PACG at the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nanchang University during August 2019 to June 2022. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) was used to measure the anterior segment parameters of those eyes, including anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber width (ACW), anterior chamber area (ACA), iris area (IA), maximum iris thickness (ITMAX), middle iris thickness (ITMID), iris curvature (IC), lens vault (LV), angle opening distance (AOD500), trabecular iris angle (TIA500), trabecular-iris space area (TISA500) and peripheral anterior synechia (PAS) length. RESULTS: In this study, paired samples t-test showed that IA [1.170(0.324) mm2], ITMAX [0.368(0.079) mm], ITMID [0.280(0.062) mm] and IC [0.147(0.037) mm] of NVG were smaller than F-NVG [2.058(0.195) mm2, 0.611(0.045) mm, 0.415(0.049) mm and 0.272(0.077) mm], the AOD500, TIA500, and TISA500 of NVG were also smaller than F-NVG. Independent samples t-test showed that ACD [2.349(0.350) mm] and ACA [16.326(3.547) mm2] of NVG were larger than PACG [1.971(0.240) mm, 12.030(1.860) mm2], but the IA [1.170(0.324) mm2], ITMAX [0.368(0.079) mm], ITMID [0.280(0.062) mm], IC [0.147(0.037) mm] and LV [0.436(0.172 mm)] were smaller than PACG [1.740(0.294) mm2, 0.548(0.084) mm, 0.404(0.065) mm, 0.283(0.060) mm and 0.737(0.196) mm]. Among the 16 patients with 360° angle-closure NVG, the PAS length was 0.834 (0.326) mm, which exceeded the Schwalbe line. CONCLUSION: In NVG, the iris is atrophied, thinned, and straight, while the ACD is normal or slightly shallow. In 360° angle-closure NVG, the PAS length exceeds the Schwalbe line, presenting a pseudo angle phenomenon and a hockey stick sign. Notably, the anterior segment structure morphology of NVG exhibit differences from those of PACG.

Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) patients are often diagnosed by X-ray imaging at a middle-late stage when drug interventions are less effective. Early PTOA is characterized by overexpressed matrix metalloprotease 13 (MMP13). Herein, we constructed an integrated diagnosis and treatment micelle modified with MMP13 enzyme-detachable, cyanine 5 (Cy5)-containing PEG, black hole quencher-3 (BHQ3), and cRGD ligands and loaded with siRNA silencing MMP13 (siM13), namely ERMs@siM13. ERMs@siM13 could be cleaved by MMP13 in the diseased cartilage tissues to detach the PEG shell, causing cRGD exposure. Accordingly, the ligand exposure promoted micelle uptake by the diseased chondrocytes by binding to cell surface αvß3 integrin, increasing intracellular siM13 delivery for on-demand MMP13 downregulation. Meanwhile, the Cy5 fluorescence was restored by detaching from the BHQ3-containing micelle, precisely reflecting the diseased cartilage state. In particular, the intensity of Cy5 fluorescence generated by ERMs@siM13 that hinged on the MMP13 levels could reflect the PTOA severity, enabling the physicians to adjust the therapeutic regimen. Finally, in the murine PTOA model, ERMs@siM13 could diagnose the early-stage PTOA, perform timely interventions, and monitor the OA progression level during treatment through a real-time detection of MMP13. Therefore, ERMs@siM13 represents an appealing approach for early-stage PTOA theranostics.

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles, measuring 40-160 nm in diameter, that are released by many cell types and tissues, including adipose tissue. Exosomes are critical mediators of intercellular communication and their contents are complex and diverse. In recent years, accumulating evidence has proved that multiple adipose tissue-derived exosomal noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs), play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of diverse metabolic diseases, such as obesity. In this narrative review, we focus on the adipose tissue-derived exosomal ncRNAs, especially exosomal miRNAs, and their dysregulation in multiple types of metabolic diseases. A deeper understanding of the role of adipose tissue-derived exosomal ncRNAs may help provide new diagnostic and treatment methods for metabolic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Insomnia has been the subject of much systematic research because it is a risk factor for a variety of diseases. There is some evidence that gamma sensory stimulation therapy has also been demonstrated to improve sleep quality for people with Alzheimer's disease. However, it is unclear whether this method is effective for treating insomnia. The principal objective of this project was to investigate the efficacy and safety of gamma sensory flicker in improving the sleep quality of insomnia patients. METHODS: Thirty-seven participants with insomnia were recruited for this prospective observational study. For a duration of 8 weeks, participants were exposed to flicker stimulation through a light and sound device. RESULTS: During the main phase of the study, adherence rates averaged 92.21%. Additionally, no severe adverse events were reported for flicker treatment. Analysis of sleep diaries indicated that 40 Hz flickers can enhance sleep quality by reducing sleep onset latencies, and arousals, and increasing total sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS: Gamma sensory flicker improves sleep quality in people suffering from insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Past studies on schizophrenia (SCZ) and the stress-sensitive neuroendocrine systems have mostly focused on a single system and traditionally utilized acute biomarkers (e.g., biomarkers from blood, urine and saliva) that poorly match the chronic course of schizophrenia in time span. Using eight biomarkers in hair, this study aimed to explore the functional characteristics of SCZ patients in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes and the interaction between the two axes. METHODS: Hair samples were taken from 137 SCZ patients and 73 controls. The SCZ patients were diagnosed by their attending physician according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV and were clinically stable after treatment. Gender, age, BMI, frequency of hair washing, marital status, education level, family history of mental illness and clozapine dosage were concurrently collected as covariates. The 10-item perceived stress scale (PSS-10) and the social readjustment rating scale were used to assess chronic stress status in SCZ patients. Eight hair biomarkers, cortisol, cortisone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), testosterone, progesterone, cortisol/cortisone, cortisol/DHEA and cortisol/testosterone, were measured by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer. Among them, cortisol, cortisone, DHEA and cortisol/DHEA reflected the functional activity of the HPA axis, and testosterone and progesterone reflected the functional activity of the HPG axis, and cortisol/cortisone reflected the activity of 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase types 2 (11ß-HSD 2), and cortisol/testosterone reflected the HPA-HPG interaction. RESULTS: SCZ patients showed significantly higher cortisone and cortisol/testosterone than controls (p<0.001, η²p=0.180 and p=0.015, η²p=0.031), lower testosterone (p=0.009, η²p=0.034), progesterone (p<0.001, η²p=0.069) and cortisol/cortisone (p=0.001, η²p=0.054). There were significant intergroup differences in male and female progesterone (p=0.003, η²p=0.088 and p=0.030, η²p=0.049) and female testosterone (p=0.028, η²p=0.051).
